“Federal Government Deems Labour’s Proposed Strike as Unlawful”
The Federal Government has stated that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is legally barred from carrying out its planned nationwide strike against the petrol price increase and the escalating cost of living in the country.
Previously, the NLC had set a seven-day deadline for the government to retract what it referred to as anti-poor and insensitive policies, failing which it would initiate a nationwide industrial action.
Reacting to the ultimatum, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice, B.E Jedy-Agba, released a statement on Wednesday stating that a national industrial court order prevents the union from commencing any strike related to the removal of the petrol subsidy.
Jedy-Agba explained that on June 5, the court had issued an injunctive order barring the NLC and the Trade Union Congress from proceeding with any planned industrial action or strike until the pending motion on notice is heard and resolved.
The Permanent Secretary urged the union to consider other negotiation avenues with the Federal Government instead of “resorting to self-help and undermining the orders of the court.” She noted that the issues causing the proposed strike are the same ones already under the court’s consideration.
Jedy-Agba further highlighted the NLC’s acceptance of the court’s jurisdiction, evidenced by its legal representation by the prestigious law firm of Femi Falana, SAN. She voiced expectation that the NLC would respect the court’s role instead of resorting to self-help and defiance of court orders.
The statement expressed concern over the NLC’s continued disregard for the court’s authority, especially in light of recent incendiary and disparaging remarks made by the NLC president against the court.
Beyond the legal restrictions against the strike, the statement acknowledged ongoing negotiations between federal and state governments and stakeholders to alleviate the negative impact of fuel subsidy removal and fuel price increase.
Jedy-Agba concluded by encouraging the NLC to pursue negotiations rather than strike action, highlighting that this would be a significant service to Nigerian workers and the national economy.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
