Iran has categorically denied unfounded allegations of its involvement in the massive assault on Israel carried out by the Palestinian Islamist group, Hamas.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani dismissed the accusations, stating that they are based on political motivations. Kanani emphasized that Iran does not interfere in the decision-making of other countries, including Palestine.
Iran, which does not recognize Israel and has consistently supported the Palestinian cause as a central element of its foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, was among the first countries to express support for Hamas’s surprise assault on Israel on Saturday.
Kanani asserted that the Palestinians possess the necessary capacity and determination to defend their nation and reclaim their rights without any assistance from Tehran. He noted that discussions about an Iranian role are intended to divert public opinion from the facts and justify potential future actions by Israel.
The Wall Street Journal had reported that “Iranian security officials helped plan Hamas’s Saturday surprise attack on Israel and gave the green light for the assault at a meeting in Beirut last Monday,” citing senior members of Hamas and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.
