Benin – Warri Road: 19 Lawyers Drag FG, Others To Court Over deplorable Benin Agbor road
A coalition of 19 Lawyers have lunched a fundamental rights enforcement lawsuit against the federal government, the Anthoney General of the Federation, and Minister of Works over the deplorable roads network of Benin Warri and Benin Asaba in the recent times
The Coalition is asking the Court to compel these authorities of the Federation to explain why the mentioned roads have failed especially without attention as they are demanding for Justice and accountability. Filed at the Federal High Court in Warri , the lawsuit is brought not to only in the lawyers’ own names, but also on behalf of all Nigerians, why rely on the Country’s Federal roads. The lawyers seek a declaration from the Court, asserting that the neglect and failure to maintain the Crucial Benin Warri Trunk A highway infringe upon the fundamental rights to life and freedom of movement enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and African Chapter on Human and People’s Rights
Notably, the recent tragic incident at the Ologbo axis where over 10 people lost their lives in a Petro thank fire Caused by the hazardious road conditions, stands out as a stark example of this valuation, While the lawyers argue that this incident unjustly robbed the victims of their rights to life
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
