TCN Targets Improved Power Generation Through Surveillance Cameras
From Lateef Taiwo
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced its plans to enhance surveillance of transmission lines and substations nationwide by deploying surveillance drones, cameras, and advanced equipment.
The initiative aims to address the rising challenges faced by the TCN, which includes: vandalism, theft of power cables, and sabotage of power station.
While touring the Mando and Kaduna Town transmission stations, Engr. Ganiyu O. Aliyu, the General Manager of Transmission in the Kaduna Region, said they have partnered with a tech firm to provide Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) for tracking power towers and installing surveillance equipment.
“We are collaborating with IT companies to use OPGW for tracking every power tower. A rotating camera with long-range visibility and infrared capabilities for night detection of theft will be deployed. We’re engaging communities to report vandalism and thefts while monitoring the stations,” he stated.
Additionally, Engr. Aliyu affirmed a significant improvement in TCN’s service delivery this year, attributing it to the implementation of new transmission projects aimed at enhancing electricity supply across the country.
He noted that these projects align with the Federal Government’s agenda to revitalize the power sector.
The projects include installation of 100MVA 132/33kV transformer in Birnin Kebbi substation, installation of a new distance protection relay for 330kV Jos line and the replacement of the Bucholz relay valve seal on 90MVA 330/132/33kV transformer T2A.
Others comprised construction of 1x150MVA 330/132/33kV substation at Kalgo with 8x330kV line bays and 1x100MVA 132/33kV with 3nos.
Also 33kV outgoing feeders, construction of double circuit line from Kaduna to Jos and emergency erosion control works on Tower 122 Kaduna- Zaria 132kV transmission line among others.
Speaking on the TCNs readiness to supply Niger Republic back with electricity whenever Nigeria lifts the ban on the country, Aliyu explained that the company can supply the neighbouring country without affecting its power supply in the region due to the capacity increase it has witnessed.
Aliyu said, “We have increase our capacity very well, in fact I can say authoritatively, that we are comfortable here in Kaduna, as it is now, in case we have any trouble, we have made this place capable that we can transfer our load from one transformer to another transformer.J
Just as he affirmed that the TCN service delivery had significantly improved in 2023 as a result of the increase in new transmission projects to boost electricity supply in the country, he added that TCN had executed several capital reinforcement projects across the transmission network throughout the country.
Aliyu, however, lamented that in spite of some external challenges like vandalism and people building under transmission installations, TCN had recorded remarkable achievements for the year 2023 and is still embarking on new ones.

Pius Akutah’s Alleged Fraud at Nigerian Shippers Council Uncovered
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
