Breaking News: Supreme Court Dismisses FG’s Appeal Against Orubebe in False Asset Declaration Case
In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the Federal Government’s appeal to overturn the Court of Appeal’s decision that cleared former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, of false asset declaration charges.
Orubebe was arraigned in 2015 for allegedly failing to disclose his properties in the asset declaration forms submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau during his tenure as a minister from 2007 to 2011. The charges were based on Section 15 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, punishable under Section 23(2) of the same Act.
Despite pleading not guilty and providing an explanation for not declaring a plot of land, the Code of Conduct Tribunal ordered the forfeiture of the property to the Federal Government.
The Court of Appeal, however, overturned the tribunal’s decision, leading to the Federal Government filing an appeal at the Supreme Court. In its lead judgment, Justice Emmanuel Agim declared the appeal incompetent, stating that prior leave of court was not obtained to file a mixed fact of law.
This Supreme Court ruling marks a conclusion to the legal proceedings against Orubebe in this particular case, affirming the Court of Appeal’s decision to clear him of false asset declaration charges.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
