Taraba Chief Judge wants  police to arrest, Prosecute former Takum chairman over lawmaker’s killing

The Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya,  has urged the Commissioner of police in the state, Mr David Iloyanomon to arrest and prosecute Mr Shiban Tikari, former Chairman of Takum Local Government council over abduction and killing of a former Assembly member, Mr Hosea Ibi.

National  Trail recalls that Ibi, a serving member representing Takum 1 constituency in the Taraba  Assembly was abducted by gunmen in Takum on Dec 30, 2017 and his decomposed body was found in the Bush few days later.

Agya disclosed this while delivering judgement in the case between the State Versus Aondoungwa David and Mwarga Iormbaga, who were arrested and charged in connection  with the former law maker’s abduction and killing.

The judge, who sentenced the two defendants to life imprisonment  for criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and kidnapping, expressed dismay over the failure of the police to arrest and prosecute Mr Tikari, the then Chairman, Takum Local Government Council, who was linked to the incident.

“I am dismayed over the failure of the police to arrest and prosecute Shiban Tikari despite all the evidence that he ordered the abduction and killing of Ibi after collecting ransom”.

The judge noted that the charge of culpable homicide punishable by death preferred against the defendants  was not proved beyond reasonable doubt by the prosecuting council  and therefore acquitted them of the charge.

“I want to urge the Commissioner of police in the state to revisit this case to ensure that true justice prevails so that the late law maker’s soul which must be crying for justice will rest in peace.

“The defendants in their separate confessional statements said the former Chairman, Tikari Shiban  recruited them to abduct the late Assembly member so that the ransom would be used in purchasing arms to fight herdsmen in the area but later instructed their leader, one Terkula to kill the victim,” he said.

Mr Mahanar Puki, counsel to the defendants, who reacted to the judgement wondered why Tikari, who has been mentioned by all the defendants as the principal actor in the incident was not arrested by the police for prosecution.

Also, Mr Abubakar Mustapha, the prosecuting counsel equally expressed surprise at the failure of the police to arrest and prosecute the former Takum Chairman despite glaring evidences linking him to the abduction and killing of the law maker.

Mustapha noted that he would use the comment of the judge in the judgement to engage the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) to take the necessary action to ensure justice in the case.

National  Trail reports that there have been several calls by well meaning people of the State, including the immediate family of the slain lawmaker, Hosea Ibi for the police to arrest and prosecute the former Takum Chairman, Tikari Shiban but the calls fell on deaf ears. //.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
