In a nationwide protest addressing the prevalent hunger and the government’s delay in implementing a new minimum wage, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), spoke to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ajaero highlighted the dire situation, stating, “There’s absolute hunger, and we’re told not to speak out; should we die of hunger?” He emphasized the protest’s dual focus on advocating for a new minimum wage and addressing the widespread hunger gripping the nation.
Referring to international standards, Ajaero pointed out that the United Nations recommends providing for the poorest individuals with $2 daily, translating to approximately N700,000 monthly for a family of six, solely for feeding expenses. He underscored the need for urgent action to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Nigerians, encompassing not only feeding but also transportation, accommodation, and healthcare costs.
Accusing the federal government of neglecting the NLC’s proposals following the removal of fuel subsidy, Ajaero criticized the lack of implementation of solutions suggested after deregulation. He emphasized the interconnectedness of economic factors, highlighting the ripple effects of increased fuel prices on transportation costs and overall living expenses.
Ajaero also raised concerns about the non-implementation of various government initiatives, including cash transfers, CNG buses, and wage awards, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the populace.
Looking ahead, Ajaero affirmed the NLC’s commitment to addressing these pressing issues, promising a review of the situation and deliberation on the appropriate course of action. As the protests continue, the NLC remains steadfast in its pursuit of economic reforms to alleviate the burden on Nigerian citizens.
