A total of 161 indigent students from Bauchi State in tertiary institutions across the country are to benefit from a scholarship scheme put in place by a Project Manager with the Abuja office of UNESCO, Dr Safiya Iliyasu.

This was revealed yesterday in Bauchi by Dr Iliyasu while giving out scholarship to 10 students, made up of seven women and three men, of the College for Shari’a and Arabic Studies (CSAS) at Dutsen Tanshi in Bauchi.

According to her, the gesture is to assist the beneficiaries to have access to quality education with a view to making them become productive citizens of the state.

Represented by members of her group, led by a former Special Adviser to Governor Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar on Education, Aliyu Jibo Dass, Iliyasu informed that most of the beneficiaries are married women who are out of school due to lack of money to pay for their school fees.

According to Dr Iliyasu, who is aspiring for the Bauchi South senatorial ticket under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state for the 2019 general election as an educationists, she finds it expedient to contribute her own quota to the educational development of Bauchi State through human capital development.
She revealed that each of the beneficiaries will be given a total sum of N17, 000 to cover their tuition fees.

Iliyasu further informed that a total of 20 students from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and Bayero University Kano (BUK) were given scholarship last week under her scholarship scheme.

She added that other beneficiaries, which she said were carefully selected to ensured that those truly in need of helping hands to complete their tertiary education, will b given their scholarships shortly.
Responding, the Secretary of the College, Malam Musa Haruna thanked Dr Iliyasu and her group for the kind gesture.

According to him, many have come with different type of promises but none has deemed it fit to fulfill their promises.
He, therefore, prayed for the success of Dr Iliyasu in her future endeavours and urged her to continue to extend helping hand to the less privileged in the society.

Some of the beneficiaries from the College who spoke at the short presentation ceremony expressed their gratitude to their benefactor, who they described as God-sent.
They assured that they will justify the confidence she reposed in them by selecting them to benefit from her gesture.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
