The NNPC Ltd has clarified that recent disruptions in the supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, across parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nigeria are primarily due to logistical challenges exacerbated by adverse weather conditions and flooding.
In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC explained that the disruption in the ship-to-ship transfer of petrol between Mother Vessels and Daughter Vessels was caused by a recent thunderstorm. This disruption, coupled with difficulties in berthing at jetties and transportation logistics to filling stations, has led to fuel queues and panic buying in affected areas.
The statement highlighted NNPC’s adherence to safety regulations enforced by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), which prohibit the loading of petroleum products during rainstorms and lightning due to safety concerns for trucks, filling stations, and human lives.
Additionally, NNPC noted that flooding along truck routes has further hampered the movement of PMS from coastal corridors to major centers like the Federal Capital, Abuja. Efforts are underway in collaboration with stakeholders to address these logistical challenges and restore normal supply of petrol across affected regions.
“While loading has resumed in areas where conditions have improved, NNPC anticipates continued improvement in the coming days to fully restore normalcy,” the statement assured.
The NNPC urged motorists to refrain from panic buying and hoarding, emphasizing its commitment to resolving the situation and ensuring seamless availability of petroleum products nationwide.
