President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has delivered a strong ultimatum to bandits, terrorists, and other criminal groups in Nigeria, demanding their immediate surrender or facing neutralization. This warning was conveyed during a lecture organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, where Tinubu was represented by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
In his address, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s comprehensive approach to combating insecurity, emphasizing both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies designed to mitigate threats from violent extremists, including Boko Haram and bandits. He expressed optimism about the government’s recent military achievements, noting the elimination of over 300 Boko Haram commanders and a decline in kidnapping incidents for ransom.
The President underscored the importance of regional cooperation, especially through Nigeria’s leadership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and inequality, through initiatives focused on job creation and infrastructure development.
The event, centered on insecurity in the Sahel region, featured insights from Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the African Union Chief Mediator on Sudan. Chambas discussed the complexities of the crisis, pointing out the roles of governance failures and external interference. Alongside former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, he stressed that military solutions alone are insufficient to address the deep-rooted challenges faced by the region.
