Chelsea Edge Real Madrid 3-2 in Thrilling Women’s Champions League Opener

Chelsea kicked off their Women’s Champions League campaign with an exciting 3-2 victory over Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge on October 8, 2024. The win places the English champions in a strong position in Group B.

Chelsea took an early lead when a Johanna Rytting Kaneryd cross deflected off Real Madrid’s Sheila Garcia and Chelsea’s Sjoeke Nuesken, resulting in an own goal. The lead was extended when Guro Reiten converted a penalty after Maria Mendez fouled Nuesken in the box. Real Madrid responded with Alba Redondo scoring just before halftime.

In the second half, Chelsea’s Mayra Ramirez restored their two-goal cushion with a looping header over Madrid goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez. A late strike by Linda Caicedo set up a tense finish, but Chelsea held on to secure the victory.

In the other Group B match, Dutch side Twente defeated Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow, courtesy of two goals from Kayleigh van Dooren.

Elsewhere, eight-time champions Lyon cruised to a 3-0 win against Galatasaray, while Roma pulled off a surprise 1-0 win over Wolfsburg in Group A.

Chelsea will look to build on this result as the group stage progresses, with a tough path ahead to Women’s Champions League glory.
