International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva commended China’s significant strides in achieving its climate objectives during her address at the 2024 ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Global Leaders Conference held in Shanghai. Speaking via video link on Thursday, Georgieva emphasized China’s robust commitment to its climate goals, attributing the country’s rapid progress to effective and sound policies.
“China remains strongly committed to its climate goals,” Georgieva stated, noting that initiatives such as the emissions trading scheme have facilitated these achievements while simultaneously generating revenue.
In her remarks, she highlighted the success of the IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST), which has mobilized $46 billion to support climate policies among its member countries since its launch in 2022. The RST aims to assist vulnerable nations in confronting the challenges posed by climate change.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank China for its contribution to the RST,” Georgieva added, acknowledging the nation’s role in fostering global climate initiatives.
The 2024 ESG Global Leaders Conference, taking place from October 16 to 18, gathers heads of international organizations, industry leaders, and environmental experts to discuss pressing global issues related to sustainability and climate action.
