Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has justified the decision to relocate the Umuahia campus of Abia State University to its main campus in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area. Speaking during his media chat titled “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians”, he emphasized that the move aims to foster greater academic unity and research opportunities across all faculties and departments.
Otti assured that the government is addressing potential challenges that may arise from the relocation, including issues of accommodation, electricity, access to research materials, and water supply. He noted that efforts are being made to ensure the proximity of internship institutions, with his administration constructing modern, well-furnished courtrooms for multi-purpose use.
Additionally, Otti revealed a partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to renovate major water schemes in Abia, beginning with the rehabilitation of water projects in Ariaria, Abia North, and Ubakala, Umuahia South.
On the issue of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release, Otti expressed his personal efforts in engaging with the relevant authorities, dismissing media showmanship as unnecessary. He affirmed that he has directly discussed the matter with President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking Kanu’s release without making it a media spectacle.
Regarding the Labour Party’s poor performance in the recent local government elections in Abia, Otti acknowledged internal party issues as a key factor. He attributed the success of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) to these conflicts, noting that his supporters shifted to other parties as a result. Despite this, Otti reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, stating, “I remain in the Labour Party,” and emphasized the importance of strong political leadership and unity for future success.
