At least 25 people have died from a cholera outbreak in Sokoto State, with 1,160 cases recorded across three local government areas. The state’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Asabe Balarabe, disclosed the figures on Monday while addressing the media.
The outbreak has primarily affected Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware LGAs. Currently, 15 patients are receiving treatment, confirmed through laboratory tests.
State Response to the Outbreak
Dr. Balarabe revealed that the government has distributed free medication to 18 LGAs to curb the disease’s spread. Rescue teams are collaborating with state authorities to manage the outbreak and prevent further fatalities.
She commended the state government’s efforts to revitalize the health sector, including the recruitment of 864 nurses and midwives to address staff shortages. Plans are underway to hire additional supporting staff to fill gaps left by retired or deceased workers.
Challenges in the Health Sector
The commissioner highlighted several challenges plaguing the health system, such as outdated infrastructure, resource shortages, and operational inefficiencies. She expressed hope that Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s administration would address these issues to improve healthcare delivery.
Impacted Communities
Our correspondent reports that the hardest-hit areas include Bazza and Gidadawa communities in Sokoto Metropolis, with victims receiving treatment at local primary health centers in Waziri B Ward.
Residents are urged to prioritize hygiene and seek medical attention promptly to prevent further spread of the disease.
