Police Arrest Suspects for Theft and Criminal Conspiracy in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested Maishanu Auwal and two others for their involvement in a theft and criminal conspiracy in the state capital.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufai, issued to journalists on Tuesday. The case began on January 17, 2025, when Ladan Muhammad, the Zonal Director of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Sokoto, reported the theft of several items from his office in the Gagi area.
Muhammad’s report included the disappearance of valuable equipment such as three KVA inverters, three 600 KVA inverter batteries, a fridge compressor, a brand-new tyre for the office bus, and a 32-inch LG television. The police promptly responded to the scene, led by the Divisional Crime Officer.
During the investigation, Maishanu Auwal, a security guard at the NBC office, confessed to conspiring with Ismaila Ahmad from the Nakasare area to steal the items. Further investigation led to the arrests of Yahuza Tukur and Abdulrahman Abbas, also from Nakasare, for helping conceal the stolen goods. Additional suspects, including Basiru Lawali, Murtala Tijani, and Abubakar Umar, were identified as receivers of the stolen property.
The stolen items have since been recovered. The suspects are now in custody, with preparations for their prosecution underway.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, commended the investigative team for their diligence and thanked the public for their support in bringing the culprits to justice. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in enhancing police effectiveness and assured the public that the suspects would face the full force of the law.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
