As the Super Eagles prepare for their World Cup qualifiers against March 21 and March 25, coach Chelle is set to trim the squad by about 16 players. The final 23-man selection will be announced on March 17, leaving several players fighting for their spots.
Home-based Players
The squad features standouts from the NPFL, including Remo Stars’ goalkeeper Kayode Bankole, Enugu Rangers’ defender Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, and Niger Tornadoes’ forward Papa Daniel Mustapha. Despite impressive performances at their clubs, these players might miss out due to the depth of talent in the Super Eagles setup.
Injured Players
Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, sidelined since December after wrist surgery, is expected to be left off the final squad as his recovery extends past the March fixtures. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, the Super Eagles’ number 10, also faces an uphill battle to make the squad following an ankle injury sustained in February. Although there is a chance of a swift recovery, his inclusion remains uncertain.
New Sevilla signing Akor Adams, injured during training, could also see his World Cup dream postponed.
Out-of-form Players
Several high-profile players are at risk due to inconsistent performances. Kelechi Iheanacho has struggled for game time at Sevilla, now playing for Middlesbrough in the Championship. Ahmed Musa, the Super Eagles’ captain, faces a tough decision due to limited minutes at Kano Pillars, while Paul Onuachu and Cyriel Dessers have underperformed at their respective clubs.
Other players like Umar Sadiq, Joe Aribo, Chidera Ejuke, Alhassan Yusuf, Christantus Uche, and Igoh Ogbu also risk missing out as they struggle to make a case for inclusion.
The coming days will be crucial in determining which of these players will make the final cut for the Super Eagles’ World Cup squad.
