Arsenal Star Leandro Trossard Delays Contract Extension Amid Uncertain Future

Arsenal could be facing a potential disruption to their summer plans, as Belgian forward Leandro Trossard has yet to commit to a new contract, according to The Athletic. Despite ongoing negotiations, the 29-year-old is reportedly holding off on signing an extension offered by the club.

The Gunners have been active in the transfer market, bringing in several high-profile names including Viktor Gyökeres, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Christian Nørgaard. Manager Mikel Arteta is still keen to add more firepower to his squad, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze identified as a top target. A £60 million bid is believed to be in the works, and the England international is said to be open to the move if terms are agreed.

Amid this busy window, Trossard’s future has become increasingly uncertain. The winger is facing mounting competition for minutes, not only from new arrivals but also from established stars like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus. Young talents Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman are also pushing for first-team opportunities, further intensifying the battle for attacking roles.

Trossard joined Arsenal from Brighton in January 2023 and has since contributed 28 goals and 23 assists in 124 appearances. His current contract runs until June 2026, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further year. The proposed new deal would boost his wages but reportedly does not extend his stay beyond 2027—one of the key reasons for his reluctance.

Last summer, Saudi club Al-Ittihad made a late loan approach with a £25 million buy option, but Arsenal rejected the offer due to a lack of time to secure a replacement. This time around, the club is said to be open to selling Trossard for around £17 million if a suitable offer comes in.

While interest has emerged from Turkish and Italian clubs, no official bids have been submitted. Trossard also changed agents earlier this year, switching from Josy Comhair to DH Sports and Entertainment—reportedly due to Comhair’s health issues.

Talks over a new contract originally began in October 2023 under former sporting director Edu Gaspar but have yet to be resolved under new director Andrea Berta. With the transfer window still open and Arsenal actively seeking wide options, Trossard’s future remains a situation to monitor closely.

Some Nigerians Have Turned Insecurity Into a Commercial Venture — PDP Chieftain

Published

on

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anthony Ehilebo, has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, alleging that some individuals now view insecurity as a profitable enterprise.

Speaking on News Central’s Politics HQ on Friday, Ehilebo said the failure of authorities to bring perpetrators of major terrorist attacks and kidnappings to justice has contributed to the continued spread of insecurity across the country.

He cited the abduction of schoolgirls in Borno State and the attack on students in Buni Yadi as examples of incidents in which those responsible have not been adequately held accountable.

“When Boko Haram kidnapped girls in Borno State, till today we have not found those responsible and held them to account. Buni Yadi happened and nobody was held to account, and it spread to other schools,” he said.

Ehilebo noted that insecurity in Nigeria has evolved into different dimensions, including terrorism driven by extremist ideology and criminal activities motivated by financial gain.

“There are multiple facets and there is one that is solely domiciled within terrorism and if you look at the literal translation of Boko Haram, it means western education is haram according to radical Islamic teachings,” he stated.

He also alleged that some people now engage in kidnapping and related crimes for economic reasons, citing a recent case involving a senior special assistant in a state government who was reportedly arrested for allegedly staging her own abduction in an attempt to obtain ransom from the government.

“It has now become an industry and a commercial venture for some and for some it has become literally a religious thinking process,” he said.

The PDP chieftain argued that the lack of consequences for criminal acts has encouraged the persistence of insecurity, stressing that stronger political will is required to address the challenge effectively.

“The bottom line that has kept this is the consequence, which is almost driven by political will,” he added.
