Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have foiled an attempted kidnapping by a notorious bandit gang and recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during a midnight operation in the outskirts of the territory.

Zagazola Makama gathered that the operation followed credible intelligence from the Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) of the Force Headquarters about a planned attack led by a gang leader identified as Idrisa, also known as Mai Duna.

Acting swiftly, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit laid an ambush between 9 p.m. on Oct. 10 and 1 a.m. on Oct. 11 along the rail track near Grow Home Estate, a location bordering the FCT and Niger State.

The armed gang, divided into two groups targeting Grow Home Estate and Royal Champion Church in Chikakore, Byazhin District, was intercepted by the police team.

A fierce gun duel ensued, lasting about 20 minutes, after which the bandits were subdued, forcing many to flee with suspected gunshot wounds.

During the search of the area, police recovered an AK-47 rifle with a defaced breech number, one magazine, and a live round of 7.62mm ammunition.

Reinforcement from the military, DSS, and local hunters was deployed to the area to secure the communities and block escape routes.

Sources said that the Commissioner of Police assured residents of continued security presence and renewed commitment to maintaining peace and safety in the FCT.

The Anti-Kidnapping Unit has commenced further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Yet today, he sits behind bars — incarcerated without bail on an allegation that the law has clearly stated its bailable, without trial, — as the nation watches in silence, Dangerous criminals, bandits and kidnappers who are very happy with Kyari’s absence became stronger and bolder with severe consequences against millions of Nigerians that are being terrorised, kidnapped and killed daily. The same man who risked his life repeatedly in service to his country has been all but abandoned by the very system he served.

With this type of our attitude as a nation, how can we build more HEROS like him in the future? How can we get officers that will be ready to fight and die for their country if we abandon our HEROS with such unprecedented and unparalleled records of Service like this easily?

The Senate Wednesday resolved to summon the Defence Minister , Mohammed Badaru Abubakar , the Chief of Army Staff , Lt – General Olufemi Oluyede and the Inspector – General of Police , Kayode Egbetokun over recent incidences of security in some parts of the country , particularly Kwara South .

It also sought for establishment of a permanent military base in Ifelodun local government area of Kwara South where bandits recently killed 12 vigilantes and Baale of Ogba-Ayo community , a suburb of Oke – Ode Town just as it mandated its Committees on Defence, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence, to undertake an on-the-spot assessment of affected areas and report back within two weeks.

Resolutions of the Senate followed a motion of urgent national importance moved to that effect by its Deputy Leader , Senator Lola Ashiru ( Kwara South ) .

Senator Ashiru in the motion titled: ” Urgent Need to address Insecurity in Kwara South Senatorial District”noted
with grave concern the escalating insecurity in Kwara South Senatorial District, especially in Ifelodun Local Government Area, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, and killings have reached alarming levels in recent weeks, forcing thousands of residents to flee their communities.

He further noted that within the last month, no fewer than twelve (12) forest guards and local vigilante members were killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Oke-Ode, including Baale of Ogba-Ayo community, and several other traditional and community leaders were among those slain in separate incidents in Babanla, Sagbe, Oro Ago, Ganmu-Alheri, etc in Ifelodun, Isin, Ekiti and Oke Ero Local Government Areas.

According to him , at least 142 persons have been kidnapped and over 70 killed in the last twelve months across Kwara South, with no fewer than 25 communities deserted due to recurring attacks—leading to severe humanitarian displacement and disruption of social and economic life. Farms have been abandoned, roads have become unsafe, local economies are paralyzed, and schools have closed, thereby worsening poverty and increasing youth vulnerability to crime.

The attacks he added , are largely perpetrated by foreign armed elements in collaboration with local informants, operating from forest hideouts along the Kwara-Kogi-Ekiti boundary axis. While the Federal Government and security agencies have made some interventions, including sporadic patrols and raids, the responses remain episodic, inadequate, and reactive, leaving vast ungoverned spaces under the control of criminal gangs.

He lamented that local security volunteers and vigilantes—who serve as first responders in most cases—lack adequate equipment, mobility, protection, or insurance, yet continue to sacrifice their lives in defense of their communities.

He therefore warned that sustained insecurity in Kwara South, if not urgently addressed, may spread to other parts of the North Central and South West geopolitical zones, thereby threatening national stability.
