US Military Submits Airstrike Plans for Nigeria After Trump’s Directive

The United States military has reportedly drafted contingency plans for potential operations in Nigeria following President Donald Trump’s directive to “prepare to intervene” amid alleged attacks on Christians by Islamic militants.
According to reports, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has submitted several military options to the Department of Defense after Secretary Pete Hegseth requested operational proposals in line with Trump’s order.
Sources familiar with the planning process revealed three possible levels of engagement — described as “heavy,” “medium,” and “light.”
Under the *heavy option*, a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group would be deployed to the Gulf of Guinea, with fighter jets and long-range bombers conducting airstrikes on militant bases across northern Nigeria.
The *medium option* involves precision drone strikes using MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1 Predator drones against identified insurgent camps, convoys, and vehicles, backed by U.S. intelligence tracking terrorist movements.
The *light option* emphasizes intelligence sharing, logistical assistance, and joint operations with Nigerian security forces targeting Boko Haram and other extremist groups implicated in mass killings, kidnappings, and church attacks.
However, senior U.S. military officials reportedly warned that limited airstrikes alone would not resolve the long-running insurgency unless Washington committed to a broader campaign similar to those in Iraq or Afghanistan — an approach they said the U.S. is not presently willing to pursue.
Speaking on Wednesday, Trump reiterated his readiness to act if the situation worsens. “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening there,” he declared.
Meanwhile, China voiced its opposition to any external intervention, reaffirming its support for Nigeria’s sovereignty. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing “firmly stands with Nigeria as it pursues its own development path” and opposes foreign interference under the pretext of religion or human rights.
In response, the Nigerian government cautioned Washington to respect its sovereignty and warned against any unilateral deployment of American forces on Nigerian soil.
