Military Veterans Demand Apology from Wike Over Verbal Abuse of Naval Officer

A coalition of Nigerian military veterans has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to tender an apology to a young naval officer whom he allegedly insulted during a heated confrontation at a disputed site in Abuja.
In a viral video, Wike was seen engaging in a tense exchange with some naval personnel during an enforcement visit. The Minister, who was inspecting the area as part of an ongoing operation, questioned the presence of the military officers said to be guarding the land.
According to the footage, Wike accused the naval officers of aiding an illegal construction, while one of them maintained that they were acting under official orders and that the property in question belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff. The argument reportedly escalated, with Wike using strong and demeaning language against the young officer.
Reacting to the incident, the Coalition of Military Veterans, through its spokesperson Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, condemned the Minister’s conduct, describing it as “unbecoming of a public office holder.”
“How can a public official call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera?” Durowaiye-Herberts queried. “If there were issues, he should have taken it up with the Chief of Naval Staff rather than humiliating a serving officer in public.”
He stressed that a uniformed officer represents the authority of the Nigerian state and that any public insult directed at such personnel undermines national institutions.
The veterans also warned against any attempt to discipline the naval officer involved in the altercation, vowing to resist such action.
“If for any reason the officer is punished, military veterans will occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister,” Durowaiye-Herberts declared.
He further reminded public officials that members of the armed forces owe allegiance to the nation, not individuals, insisting that Wike’s remarks were disrespectful and uncalled for.
“Wike’s action demeans the dignity of the office of a minister,” he added. “He should apologise for using abusive language. It is unacceptable behaviour from someone in public service.”
