Mailafia: Critics Won’t Stop My Peace Cup Mission
…as Mailafia 10th Edition Peace Cup set to kick off 10th October
Amb. Dr. Yakubu Agabi Mailafia, organiser of the Mailafia Peace and Unity Football Competition, has said he will not be deterred by criticisms over the resources he commits to the annual grassroots football tournament, insisting that his focus remains on creating opportunities for young talents.
Mailafia stated this on Saturday during the draws for the 10th edition of the competition, where he said he derives peace and fulfilment from organising the tournament because of its contribution to youth development, talent discovery and peaceful coexistence.
He said despite comments by some people that he was wasting his resources on the competition, he remained committed to the initiative because of the opportunities it provides for young footballers.
“People have said that I am wasting my resources in organising the competition, but I am not perturbed by what they are saying,” Mailafia said.
According to him, his major concern is to ensure that young and talented players are given the opportunity to showcase their abilities and pursue football careers, not only in Nigeria but also abroad.
Mailafia said the competition had continued to enjoy grassroots support, describing it as a platform that has attracted attention beyond Nasarawa State and Nigeria.
“I find peace organising this competition,” he said, adding that it was “the only competition that carries grassroots support, not just in Nigeria but in Africa.”
He said the tournament was more than a football competition, stressing that it was intended to provide young people with a platform through which their talents could be identified, developed and exposed to opportunities.
Mailafia therefore charged the organisers of the 10th edition to remain committed and focused, urging them to take ownership of the competition and ensure that it was conducted according to acceptable best practices.
“I want the organisers to be committed and focused and see the competition as their own, to take over ownership of the competition and ensure that it is done with the best practice needed,” he said.
The 10th edition of the Mailafia Peace and Unity Football Competition is scheduled to commence on October 10, 2026, with 32 teams drawn from across Nasarawa State expected to participate in the tournament.
Speaking during the draws, President of the Dedere Progressive Mandate Youth, Comrade Aminu Musa Rilwanu, said the exercise was organised to prepare the teams and officials for the commencement of the competition.
Rilwanu said the competition, hosted annually by Mailafia, Majinkiran Daddere, had contributed to the discovery and development of football talents at the grassroots.
He said thousands of youths had benefited from the competition at the state, national and international levels, citing Anas, a former Nasarawa United player, as one of the players discovered through the tournament.
According to him, Anas was spotted through the competition and has since progressed in his football career abroad.
Rilwanu said the tournament had therefore continued to serve as a platform for young footballers to demonstrate their abilities and pursue opportunities beyond their communities.
“The draws are to prepare the players and organise for the competition proper,” he said.
He urged all the 32 participating teams to approach the tournament with the spirit of peace and unity, stressing that their participation should contribute to peaceful coexistence among youths across Nasarawa State.
“We urge all the 32 teams from across Nasarawa State to ensure that their participation will bring about unity and peace in the state,” Rilwanu said.
He also called on officials involved in the competition to demonstrate commitment and maintain effective communication throughout the tournament.
Rilwanu said dignitaries from within and outside the state were expected to grace the opening ceremony on October 10, as activities begin for the 10th edition of the competition.
According to verifiable reported, the annual tournament has over the years provided a grassroots platform for young footballers to compete, develop their skills and seek opportunities for progression within and outside Nigeria.

Eagle Times Newspaper Unveiled, Publisher Pledges Investigative Journalism, Accountability
The Publisher of The Eagle Times Nigeria, Sir Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, has pledged that the newspaper will promote accountability, credible journalism and public-interest reporting in its coverage of national affairs.
Chukwunyere made the commitment on Thursday, October 1, 2026, during the official unveiling and launch of The Eagle Times Nigeria.
He said the new media organisation was established not merely to add another newspaper to Nigeria’s media landscape, but to provide a platform committed to serving the public interest.
According to him, the newspaper’s guiding philosophy, “The Voice for the People, The Watchdog for the Nation,” places a responsibility on the organisation to listen to Nigerians, tell their stories, highlight issues affecting their daily lives and scrutinise those entrusted with public responsibilities.
“To be a voice for the people means that we must listen to Nigerians, tell their stories, highlight their concerns and give visibility to issues that affect their daily lives,” he said.
The publisher added that The Eagle Times would be guided by accuracy, fairness, professionalism, credibility and responsible journalism, stressing that the newspaper would not publish stories merely because they were sensational.
“We will verify. We will investigate. We will seek the other side. We will correct our mistakes when we make them,” he said.
Chukwunyere further stated that the newspaper would endeavour to give individuals and organisations the opportunity to respond whenever allegations were made against them.
“Our commitment is not to any political party, government or individual. Our primary commitment is to journalism, to truth and to the Nigerian public,” he said.
He noted that the newspaper was launching at a time when the media industry was undergoing rapid transformation, with audiences increasingly consuming news through digital platforms, including websites, television, podcasts and social media.
He said The Eagle Times would therefore operate as a multimedia organisation, combining its newspaper with digital platforms and The Eagle Times TV to reach audiences across different channels.
According to him, the organisation also intends to create opportunities for young journalists, writers, photographers, producers, digital creators and other media professionals to develop their skills and contribute to journalism and national development.
Chukwunyere said the newspaper’s coverage would include politics, governance, business, economy, security, judiciary, education, health, technology, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and international affairs.
He, however, said the organisation intended to distinguish itself not only by the subjects it covered but by the quality and approach of its journalism.
We want to tell stories that matter, we want to investigate issues that require investigation, we want to highlight Nigerians who are making a difference, and we want to give communities that are often ignored an opportunity to be heard,” he said.
The publisher acknowledged the challenges involved in establishing a newspaper, saying the venture required investment, commitment, professional discipline and the courage to pursue an idea.
He expressed appreciation to the management, editorial, reporting, production and digital teams, as well as families, friends, partners and supporters who contributed to the establishment of the organisation.
Chukwunyere also assured readers, viewers and the newspaper’s digital audience that The Eagle Times would strive to earn their trust and remain accountable to the standards it had set for itself.
He said the newspaper’s success would not be measured only by circulation figures, website traffic or social media followers, but also by the confidence Nigerians placed in its journalism.
“Today, we spread our wings. Today, The Eagle Times takes flight,” he said, reaffirming the newspaper’s commitment to its slogan: “The Voice for the People, The Watchdog for the Nation.”

CleanTop Services Ltd (IDEAS-TVET Cohort 3) Flags Off Training For 200 In Fisheries, Aquaculture
By Leo Zwanke, Lafia
CleanTop Services Ltd, an integrated farm owned by former Nasarawa State governorship candidate, Rt. Hon. David Emmanuel Ombugadu, has flagged off a six-month vocational skills acquisition programme for 200 trainees in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The flag-off ceremony, held at Sa’abhi International Hotel and Resort, Karu, Nasarawa State on Thursday is being implemented under the IDEAS-TVET Cohort 3 programme of the World Bank and Federal Government of Nigeria.
The programme is being delivered in collaboration with CleanTop Services Ltd, which serves as the Training Service Provider (TSP) for the initiative.
The six-month training is designed to equip the beneficiaries with practical skills in fisheries and aquaculture, while successful participants are expected to obtain a National Skill Qualification (NSQ) recognised and awarded by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Speaking on the programme, the Training Programme Manager (TPM), Mr Vincent Yoko, said the initiative was aimed at providing beneficiaries with relevant vocational skills that could improve their capacity for self-employment and participation in the aquaculture value chain.
Yoko explained that the training would combine vocational skills acquisition with practical knowledge required to operate and manage fisheries and aquaculture enterprises.
He said the programme was part of efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education and training by giving participants skills that could be applied beyond the classroom.
According to him, the involvement of the World Bank, Federal Government and IDEAS-TVET would provide the beneficiaries with an opportunity to acquire skills and a recognised qualification alongside practical experience.
He urged the 200 trainees to take the training seriously, describing their participation as an opportunity to acquire skills that could serve as a foundation for sustainable livelihoods.
One of the beneficiaries, Joe Amadu Sireh, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the programme, saying the training would expose beneficiaries to practical knowledge in fisheries and aquaculture.
Sireh said the opportunity was particularly important because of the increasing need for young people and other Nigerians to acquire vocational skills that could translate into productive economic activities.
Another beneficiary, Oziohu Felix, also welcomed the programme, saying the six-month training would provide participants with an opportunity to develop practical competence in a specialised area.
Felix said the participants were looking forward to gaining hands-on experience and making effective use of the skills acquired during the training.
The beneficiaries said the recognition of the training through the National Skill Qualification would further give participants a formal qualification that could support their future career and enterprise development.
The organisers said the six-month training would expose participants to various aspects of Fisheries and Aquaculture, with emphasis on practical vocational competence.
The programme is being implemented under the IDEAS-TVET framework, with CleanTop Services Ltd serving as the Training Service Provider for the cohort.
At the end of the training, participants who meet the requirements are expected to receive the National Skill Qualification, providing them with a formally recognised vocational qualification in the field.
