A/Ibom Rep Promises Succour For Families Of 8 Worshippers Killed In Auto Crash

As outpouring of grief and sympathy continued to trail last Thursday’s ghastly motor accident which claimed the lives of no fewer than 14 worshipers including senior clergiesof the Salvation Army Church (SAC), in Akwa Ibom state, the member representing Etinan/Nsit Ubium/ Nsit Ibom Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom state, Obong Paul Ekpo, has pledged to provide succour for surviving family members of his late Constituents.

The fatal accident involving the bus conveying the worshippers, and Dangote Truck, our Correspondent gathered, occurred on the Ovie-River bridge along the Benin-Lagos Expressway, Edo State, while returning from a Pastors conference in Lagos.

The sad tragedy, it was learnt claimed eight members (couples) from the Constituency including the late Majors Sampson, from Ekom Iman community; Major and Captain Emem Obot; from Ikot Ibok/Ikot Nte villages; Majors Unyime and Mary Ekere, from Ikot Inyang Osom, Etinan Local Government Area, and Captain Edet Akpanumana from Ikot Ubo, in Nsit Ubium LGA.

Leading the team on the condolence visit, the lawmaker, who observed a minute silence in honour of the victims said; “if you have not experienced the death of a loved one, you wouldn’t know what it means, and how it feels to lose both parents on the same day.”

“This is very sad. The moment we are in today is not one that anyone dreamt of, but we have to give glory to God. Since they died in serving God, I believe that he has received their souls,” he said.

Ekpo, who admonished the children to uphold their parents’ virtues in serving God, and in propagating the gospel, prayed God to console the bereaved children and family, assuring them of his support.

“I will support you in the ability that God will give me through one of you, which will pave the way for others to be empowered,” he assured.

However, members of the bereaved family and other Church leaders – Sergeant Nkpoidêt, and Lieutenant Philip Emeh, thanks the lawmaker, who also recently buried his wife for the empathy visit.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
