Aboru aboye ni ede Yoruba, t’o ko ni fun Awon Akọba Ifa.
Tope Alabi, a popular Nigerian gospel singer, has responded to the controversy surrounding a viral video in which she was heard singing in the Yoruba language using the phrase “Aboru Aboye,” commonly used as a greeting among Ifa initiates.
In the video, Alabi referred to herself as “ebo,” which translates to “sacrifice,” and sang the words, “Abiye ni mi, Oruko mi ni yen. Mo de bo, mo ru, mo ye” (I am a sacrifice, that’s my name. I am a sacrifice accepted by God, that’s my name).
The lyrics sparked a flurry of reactions, with fans and some Christian leaders expressing differing opinions about her choice of words.
- In a video Alabi, while ministering in a white garment church, explained that “Aboru Aboye” is purely a Yoruba phrase and not exclusively used by traditionalists.
Alabi, backed by biblical references, clarified that her use of the language is her unique style as a gospel artist.
She stated, “It is recorded that David made a sacrifice of faithfulness to God. Why was the word sacrifice not written as the same English word in the Yoruba version of the Bible? It is a Yoruba language. There is no special language for traditionalists. We are all speaking the Yoruba language.”
She added, “If some people say they want to use the language in their own style, it is not bad. We have also decided to use it in our own style.”
Emphasizing the presence of sacrifices in the Bible, she questioned, “Was Abraham’s sacrifice accepted or not? Was it not the same with Isaac?”
Ifa priest, Oluwo Jogbodo Orunmila, suggested that Alabi should conduct a DNA test to be sure of her lineage.
Orunmila, the chief priest of Iledi Imule Agba in Oyan, Odo Otin North Local Council Development Authority in Osun State, mentioned Alabi’s previous use of terms such as ‘Eledumare’ and other praises usually associated with Orunmila (the god of wisdom) and Yoruba deities.
He stated that anyone labeling Alabi as an idol worshipper is simply fueling public opinion and lacks knowledge about Ifa, which maintains secrecy and only identifies those who choose to be identified.
Regarding the phrase’s usage, Orunmila explained that it is not a common lexicon that anyone can use, emphasizing its association with Ifa initiates.
He shared the story of the Odu Ifa ‘Ogunda meji’ in Ifa literature, which introduced the characters Aboru, Aboye, and Abosise, three women who rendered special assistance to Orunmila.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
