Aisha Yesufu, a prominent Nigerian activist, has shared her thoughts on the recent coup in Niger Republic and drawn parallels to the situation in Nigeria.
In Niger Republic, President Mohamed Bazoum faced a challenging situation when he was held hostage by dissatisfied members of the elite Presidential Guard. The army responded with an ultimatum to release the embattled Islamic leader. The West African bloc, ECOWAS, condemned the incident, labeling it an “attempted coup” and called for Bazoum’s immediate release. Bazoum’s election marked the first democratic transition of power in the country, which has a history of military coups since gaining independence from France in 1960.
President Bola Tinubu, who also serves as the chairman of ECOWAS, firmly stated that they would not tolerate any actions that undermine democratically-elected governments.
Aisha Yesufu, addressing the chaos in Niger Republic, expressed her belief that a similar situation is unfolding in Nigeria. She questioned the legitimacy of President Tinubu and stressed the importance of not distinguishing between political and military coups, as this differentiation poses a threat to democracy.
In a tweet, Yesufu emphasized the need to recognize the similarities between the situations in both countries, highlighting the risk to democracy if such issues are not addressed appropriately. She further asserted that President Tinubu is not considered legitimate in her eyes, using the hashtag #NotMyPresidentTinubu to drive home her point.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
