The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the Nigerian Army has handed over 23-year-old Adeleye Ayomide, who is accused of killing Idowu Christiana, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, shared the news via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that the handover took place on September 5, 2024.
“23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye has been handed over to #LagosPoliceNG by 9 Brigade #HQNigerianArmy. The handover took place today, September 5, 2024, at about 1400hrs. Investigation is ongoing,” Hundeyin wrote.
Lt-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, spokesperson for the 81 Division Nigerian Army, also confirmed Ayomide’s arrest earlier that day, indicating that the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army was responsible for transferring him to the police for further investigation.
The tragic incident began when Christiana was abducted by suspected kidnappers on August 19, 2024, along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos State. Initially, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N3 million, but later agreed to N350,000 after negotiations. Despite receiving the money, they refused to release Christiana, leading to her death.
The Student Union Government president of FUNAAB, Ibrahim Adeyemi, confirmed Christiana’s death, stating, “The union can confirm that she was reportedly killed by her abductor. We will be addressing the matter soon.”
Christiana’s death has sparked widespread outrage, particularly on social media, where users have expressed their grief and called for justice.
