Authorities Seize Vehicles at Ortom’s Automobile Workshop Following Panel’s Raid
The asset recovery committee established by Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, made a forceful entry into the automobile workshop owned by former governor Samuel Ortom on Tuesday. The committee arrived with towing vehicles and proceeded to remove several vehicles from the premises.
According to the Chief Press Secretary of Governor Alia, Kula Tersoo, the committee’s action was in response to allegations that 29 government vehicles were looted during the tenure of the previous governor. Tersoo also highlighted the extensive damage to the Government House, including vandalized furniture, window blinds, electronics, and other household appliances.
Reports suggest that the asset recovery committee faced resistance from workers at Ortom’s automobile workshop during the raid. Bemgba Iortyom, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, confirmed the incident and stated that towing trucks were sent by Governor Alia to seize the vehicles after previous attempts to drive them away had failed.
It is worth noting that Ortom and his deputy, Benson Abounu, obtained a court order preventing the asset recovery committee from taking action against them. The lawsuit seeks clarification on whether property allocated to them as entitlements and remuneration can be considered state government assets, as well as the validity of executive actions and decisions made by Ortom and Abounu prior to May 29, 2023. The former governor and deputy governor argue that the asset recovery committee lacks the authority to interfere with their property rights without due process or disregarding constitutional approvals made by their predecessor.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
