Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has expressed concerns over the economic policies of the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, citing increasing hardship across the country. Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria Development Update report by the World Bank in Abuja on Thursday, Mohammed stated that the current policies are not producing the desired outcomes for Nigerians.
He emphasized that the revenues available to state governments are insufficient to meet the growing challenges faced by local populations. “Nigerians are not enjoying the regime at this time across board, not only the federal government but also the state and local governments,” he said, stressing that the responsibility lies with economic managers to propose solutions.
Governor Mohammed called for a return to basic economic principles to address the current hardship, urging a reassessment of budget and policy measures that could alleviate the growing strain on Nigerians. He pointed out issues such as employment and wages, particularly highlighting the struggles of those working in the informal sector, urging efforts to support self-employment and entrepreneurship.
He also stressed that the current policies have led to a significant drop in the purchasing power of citizens, noting that the current economic approach is not delivering the needed results.
During the presentation of the report, Alex Sienaert, the lead economist for the World Bank in Nigeria, emphasized that to achieve growth, macroeconomic stabilization efforts should be complemented by job creation initiatives. Dr. Ndiame Diop, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, also acknowledged that while the reforms may be difficult, they are essential for the long-term stability of the Nigerian economy.
Governor Mohammed’s remarks underline the growing concerns about the impact of the current administration’s policies, with calls for urgent measures to alleviate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians across the country.
