Black Weekend in Delta as accident claims three students, properties worth thousands destroyed
Residents of Ekiugbo-Ughelli in Ughelli north local government area of Delta State were thrown into mourn as a reckless driver of a GLK car veered off the road and killed three school students.
According to an eyewitness account, the driver lost control of his steering went off the road rammed into a restaurant and provision stores, and killed the three students who were going home from school.
According to him, the driver with three other young men who were identified as “Yahoo Yahoo boys” were always seen driving recklessly within the ever-busy Uggelli-Warri road without caution.
Another eyewitness who was simply identified as Mathew Omejevwe told our correspondent that he saw death coming to him as the driver faced them but miraculously cheated the death.
” I heard a loud sound of a vehicle break and I turned back only to see the vehicle coming towards me and I jumped, the car rammed into the restaurant, the next provision stores, and knocked down three pupils going home from school.
“The occupants of the car who were notorious Yahoo yahoo boys in the area took to their heels but were given hot chase two escapes and two were apprehended by aggrieved mobs”.
Our correspondent who visited the scene of the accident saw pupils struggle for life while one died instantly.
It was gathered that the rest two gave up their ghost at Ughelli Centre Hospital as the crew of doctors tried their best to save their lives but to no avail.
At the time of filing this report, the lifeless pupils were deposited at the hospital mortuary while the men of Nigeria police from ‘A’ Division Ughelli are investigating the immediate causes of the accident.
Meanwhile, residents of the community blamed the officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission for issuing driving licenses to underage members of the society who don’t have driving experience.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
