Boko Haram and sponsors: northern governors unsettled

Following an allegation by a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafiya that a northern governor was conspiring with the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists to kill Nigerians, the allegation has unsettled the umbrella body of northern governors.
Mailafiya who was a guest of the department of security services, DSS, in Jo’s, Plateau state, earlier today, the Northern Governors Forum urged that a thorough investigation be conducted to ascertain who among them was involved.
In a statement, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong, said the Forum is concerned about the weighty allegation made and that “We demand immediate and thorough investigation”, in the statement signed by Simon Makut Macham, director of press.
“we as Northern Governors have met severally to discuss insecurity in the Northern Region and the nation at large where we did not only condemn the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminals, but also engaged the President and all heads of security agencies in finding solutions to the problem.
“To now say that one of our members is leading Boko Haram in the Nigeria is a serious allegation that cannot be swept under the carpet”, he stressed.
The Governor also hopes that such allegations are not smear campaigns or attempts to discourage the Northern Governors who are putting in their best to bring an end to insecurity in the region, but further called on the people to volunteer useful information on how to get over the insecurity in the country.
Meanwhile, since the invasion of Mailafiya by the DSS, individuals and groups besieged the of the establishment; even though, Mailafiya and his lawyers were said to be allowed in while the press was stopped.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
