A tragic canoe accident has claimed the lives of a woman and her three children between Dikwa and Mafa Local Government Areas in Borno State. The incident occurred on September 23, 2024, following severe flooding that has ravaged parts of Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the loss of four lives, expressing condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. The victims, identified as Ya Mallum Shettima, an adult female from Marte LGA, and her three children—Maimuna Akura (10), Umira Alhaji Bulama (6), and Yagana Bulama Kawu (5 months)—were from Bulabulin Ward in Dikwa.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Daso, the canoe carrying the victims capsized in floodwaters along Maiduguri Road. The victims were taken to Dikwa General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Their bodies were released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP ML Yusufu, extended his heartfelt condolences and urged residents in flood-affected areas to exercise caution. The police command also provided emergency contact numbers for reporting distress situations.
This tragic incident occurred just days after the police issued a warning about the risks posed by floods in Dikwa and Mafa, advising the public to avoid dangerous routes.
