Cause of gender equality enjoys sustained, healthy development in China

Women’s status mirrors a country’s social etiquette and civility.
In China, female pediatric intensive care specialist Qian Suyun, who has nearly 40 years of pediatric experience, has brought a ray of hope to numerous children in emergency and critical conditions with her superb medical skills and ethics.
Bi Lixia, a woman that heads a rice farming cooperative in Jianli, central China’s Hubei province, has actively applied technologies in rice growing, contributing her strength to maintaining food security.
They are representatives of today’s females and have proven that women are creators of material and spiritual wealth and represent an important force driving social development and progress with concrete actions. Such progress is inseparable from the high-quality development of the cause of gender equality in China in the new era.
China attaches high importance to the cause of gender equality. In the country, women are able to exercise their democratic rights, participate in economic and social development, and benefit from the outcomes of reforms and development on an equal and legal basis.
So far, it has built a legal system for the protection of women’s rights and interests, which covers over 100 separate laws and regulations. The average life expectancy of women has exceeded 80 years. The gender gap in the nine-year compulsory education has been basically eliminated. Women accounted for over 50 percent of students in institutions of higher education.
As of the end of 2020, the number of women participating in maternity insurance had reached 103 million, and 650 million women participated in basic medical insurance. Women accounted for 40 percent of the labor force and 45.8 percent of the total science and technology personnel across China.
These sets of data reflect the efforts made by China to promote the cause of gender equality, the solid guarantee for women’s rights and interests, the broad rights and interests enjoyed by women, and the increasingly prominent role of women in economic and social development.
Women are gaining increasing senses of achievement, happiness and safety, and their confidence is growing in pursuing their own dreams.
In the report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the country vowed to remain committed to the fundamental national policy of gender equality and protect the lawful rights and interests of women and children, eliminate unjustified restrictions and discrimination that undermine equal employment, and establish a policy system to boost birth rates. It has charted the course for achieving greater gender equality.
The cause of gender equality in China is entering a golden period featuring more benefits for women, a better development environment, and leapfrogging progress.
From finding a balance between work and family to breaking through the glass ceiling in the workplace, Chinese women’s development is supported by the entire society. As relevant parties work together to keep advancing the healthy development of gender equality, the cause will see broader and brighter prospects.
Kwara State Government has appointed two committees comprising mainly technocrats and Labour leaders to verify the existing gratuities’ records at the state and local government levels and clear pensioners to receive their dues on the basis of when they retired from the civil service.
The eight-person committee for the state gratuities is headed by the Auditor General of the State, while the one for the local government gratuities is headed by the Local Government Auditor General.
Members of the committee are representatives of the retired Permanent Secretaries, retired civil servants’ association, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Account and Finance Staff (ICAN certified), Account and Finance Staff (ANAN Certified), Secretary Iyabo Adebayo (for state) and Secretary Mrs Amina Ahmed (Local Government). The committee at the LGA included representatives of the retired LG Civil Servants Association and Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
“The primary objective of the committee is to ensure the accuracy and transparent compilation of outstanding state and LGA gratuities for eligible pensioners in readiness for automated bank transfer payments,” Commissioner for Finance Dr. Hauwa Nuru said in a statement.
The committees’ terms of reference include to request and obtain from the pension board the detailed yearly gratuity schedule of all outstanding liabilities to date, verify the accuracy and completeness of same, confirm the qualification of all pensioners against PSN Number/Pension Number, KWSSRA SSID database, and NIN; ensure proper record reconciliation by cross checking figures against available government records and documents, prioritise payments recommendations chronologically, ensure recommended disbursements start from the oldest outstanding year and progress upward in line with available funds, and ensure accountability and audit readiness in all processes and documentation.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has stepped in to address the technical issues frustrating applicants trying to verify their recruitment status on the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) portal.
In a statement released on Saturday, Tunji-Ojo directed the immediate resolution of all glitches preventing users from accessing the site.
“Following recent complaints from applicants into the paramilitary agencies who are still unable to determine their fate due to the ongoing upload of information, I have directed the Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board to ensure that all uploads are completed immediately,” the minister said.
The CDCFIB had earlier announced that applicants could begin checking the recruitment portal from Thursday, but thousands have since reported encountering login failures, slow responses, and incorrect job placements.
Several users said the portal either failed to load after entering their details or displayed job positions different from the ones they had originally applied for.
The minister’s intervention aims to ensure a smoother verification process and restore confidence in the ongoing recruitment exercise for the nation’s paramilitary agencies.

Two Nigerian military officers accused of plotting to overthrow the democratic government are currently on the run, TheCable has learnt.
According to multiple military sources, the two officers fled the country shortly before security agents began a wave of arrests in connection with the alleged coup plot earlier this month.
So far, 16 officers have been taken into custody and interrogated, while the military continues to track down others believed to be involved. Sources said a total of 18 officers were marked for arrest, but two escaped before they could be apprehended.
One of the fugitives has been identified as Major J.M. Ganaks (service number N/14363), a member of NDA Regular Course 58 from the Federal Capital Territory, whose last posting was Jaji, Kaduna State.
The second officer, Captain G. Binuga (service number N/167722), from Taraba State, was attached to DHQ SOF, Bida, Niger State, and is a member of NDA Regular Course 64.
More Arrests Underway
Security sources disclosed that several of the detained officers have provided “useful information,” leading to additional arrests. It is estimated that over 30 officers are now in military custody.
While some suspects are reportedly refusing to speak, others are said to be “fully cooperating” with investigators.
Contrary to reports suggesting that the coup was planned for October 1, insiders revealed that no specific execution date had been set, and the arrests only began in the first week of October.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has not officially confirmed the alleged coup plot. In a brief statement, however, the DHQ described the ongoing investigation as a “routine internal process” aimed at upholding discipline and professionalism within the armed forces.
