Christian Association of Nigerians (CAN) Raises Alarm on Unbearable Economic Hardship
In a recent statement released by the Christian Association of Nigerians in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, concerns were expressed on the escalating economic challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. The organization, on Friday, highlighted the growing suffering in the country, emphasizing the severe impact on the populace.
The statement from Elder Sunday Oibe, the Secretary-General of Northern CAN, also drew attention to the alarming increase in security challenges across the nation. The association acknowledged the recent call by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar III, for both federal and state governments to address the prevailing economic hardships that led to protests.
Protests erupted earlier in Minna and Kano, with citizens expressing discontent over the rising cost of living. Women in Niger State blocked the Minna-Bida Road, calling for government intervention in addressing the challenges of hunger. The protests were met with tear gas and arrests by security operatives.
In response to these events, the Northern CAN called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the economic crisis and escalating security situation. The statement highlighted the unbearable conditions faced by ordinary Nigerians due to the high costs of food, transportation, goods, and services, along with the collapse of small businesses due to power supply issues.
The organization expressed sadness over the continuous attacks in Plateau State, urging the government to take decisive action to halt killings not only in Plateau but across the country. The statement emphasized the need for justice against perpetrators and sponsors of insecurity and called for collective efforts to support security agencies in the fight against criminals.
Additionally, the Northern CAN criticized regional groups such as the Arewa Consultative Forum, the Northern Elders Forum, and some Northern Senators for opposing the government’s plan to relocate certain departments from Abuja to Lagos.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
