Concerns Arise as Corpses Pile Up Along Lagos-Ibadan Highway

Motorists traversing the Mowe-Ibafo region have voiced apprehensions regarding the increasing occurrence of corpses found along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

These motorists, who conversed with PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, expressed trepidation about the potential for a disease outbreak and the security risks posed by this recurring issue.

During a visit by our correspondent to the Mountain Top University vicinity of the highway, an unsettling sight greeted them: a corpse, marked with burn scars and wrapped in a blue cloth, secured with rope, had been callously dumped along the roadside. This was not an isolated incident, as it was also revealed that another corpse had been discovered opposite the university on Tuesday, and similar occurrences had been reported recently.

One anonymous motorist, fearing police interrogation, called on law enforcement agencies to intensify their presence and investigations in the area, stating, “I believe the corpse was discarded during the night, but I can’t confirm that because it was the noxious odor emanating from the area that drew attention to it. It indicates that this place is not secure, particularly at night.”

“The stench from the deceased body is highly unpleasant and could lead to health problems if not promptly removed,” the motorist added.

When reached for comment, Omolola Odutola, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, advised residents to promptly report such incidents to their local Divisional Police Officer, emphasizing that she had already informed the nearest police station for necessary action.

“When they come across such a situation, they should report it to the closest police station. The police cannot take action unless they are informed, so people should make it a point to report such issues to their DPO. The challenge is that, most of the time, we might not be aware of a missing person unless their family reports it,” she explained.

Regarding the removal of the body, our correspondent contacted Lanre Ogunsola, the Chairman of the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, who requested that a message be sent for further communication. As of the time of this report, he had not responded to the message.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
