In response to the escalating food prices and increasing hardship faced by Nigerians, the Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Ogun Command, has announced plans for another round of distribution of seized rice and other food items. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden on citizens, pending finalization of modalities by the Federal Government.
Following a tragic incident in Lagos, where armed hoodlums attempted to disrupt a similar distribution, the Customs emphasized the need for careful planning to prevent such occurrences. The distribution will prioritize transparency and fairness, with thorough screening of eligible beneficiaries.
Mr. Ben Oramalugo, the Area Controller of the Oyo/Osun Command, highlighted the directive from the federal government to distribute seized rice at subsidized rates to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. He assured that once the necessary modalities are in place, the distribution will commence, with regular updates provided to the public.
Additionally, the Command intercepted and seized fake drugs worth over N1.7 billion in the Bakatari area of Omi-Adio, Ibadan, during the 2024 fiscal year. These efforts are part of the Command’s intensified crackdown on smuggling to protect public health and safety.
Oramalugo reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for smuggling and the sale of counterfeit drugs. He urged importers of fake drugs to cease such activities, warning of stringent measures to prevent their entry into the country. He also called on the public to report any suspicious activities related to the trade of fake drugs to the Nigeria Customs Service for prompt action.
The Customs Command remains committed to supporting the federal government’s efforts to enhance food security and curb illicit trade activities. With the cooperation of the public, they aim to stamp out the dangerous trade of counterfeit drugs and ensure the well-being of all citizens.
