The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024, into law, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve electricity supply in the state.
The bill, which was fast-tracked, passed after its third reading during a plenary session on Wednesday, presided over by Speaker Dennis Guwor. To facilitate the swift passage, the House Majority Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, moved a motion to suspend specific standing rules, allowing the bill to move quickly through the process. The motion was seconded by Frank Esenwah, representing Oshimili North Constituency, and unanimously approved by the members.
Upon the bill’s passage, Speaker Guwor expressed his enthusiasm, emphasizing its potential to significantly enhance electricity supply, stimulate economic activities, and improve living standards across Delta State.
“This bill represents a critical step towards improving the state’s electricity infrastructure,” the Speaker said. “It will not only boost the power supply but also enhance the overall well-being of our people.”
He commended his fellow lawmakers for their contributions, thanking them for their support in ensuring the successful passage of the bill.
Once signed into law by the Governor, the Electricity Power Sector Bill is expected to bring transformative changes to Delta State’s power sector, fostering growth and development in various sectors of the economy.
