Delta Chief Judge reviews 600 Case files, 234 inmates Freed As 70-year Old Woman Allegedly Commits Suicide

No fewer than 234 inmates who have been awaiting trail over the years in several Correctional Centers In Delta State were on Thursday freed by the state Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Dai who also reviewed 600 Case files
Justice Dai who spoke to Journalists in Asaba after her visitation to various Correctional Centers In Delta State, said that the freed inmates were kept in the Centers with their case files allegedly missing adding that those imprisoned were not unduly done so disclosing that 168 files at the sapele Correctional Centers, two at the Sapele Remand Home , 469 files and 33 Supplementary Center as her visitation was the fourth Quarter of 2023 and last in the year
She said that the freed inmates were set free considering the number of years they have spent in awaiting trail four persons were discharged and regained their freedom after their case files showed nothing too serious disclosing that the discharged persons include; Lucky 23 who was detained for four years and eight months for alleged Conspiracy and robbery, Isaiah Johnson 38 and Okogbe Ochuko 38 both accused of armed robbery and murder, and Monday Isaac, among others whose Case files were empty and nothing to show much of their Offences.
According to Justice Dai ” Where there is no file and the man is here, the Chief Judge Can exercise her discretion because nothing is keeping him here, same with many others The point is that for somebody to be here, there must be valid warrant ” We have to diversify in a bid to see whether more Cases will be disposed of instead of Conflicting trails and I hope it will be disposed of instead staying in the prisons till no time” At Warri ‘s Medium Security Custodial Center, the Deputy Comptroller of Corrections, Mr John Edo informed the Chief Judge that the Center, among other things, was faced with some Challenges including taking inmates to Court and the Cost of fueling the vehicle..Most of the freed inmates, one of them, Michael Lucky 21 one of the freed inmates said that he was accused of armed robbery, stressing that he spent five years inside the prison for crime he didn’t Commit, adding that he would go back to his workshop where he is a welder. Similarly,Okogbo Ochuko said that he was accused of armed robbery and was arrested on August 4,2023 adding that he was a hunter and thanked God for regaining his freedom even as he said that he was also educated while in the Correctional Center. Meanwhile, residents of Enamejewa Street in Warri/ Sapele Road Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State were on Wednesday thrown into Confusion as an over 70years old mother of Six Children allegedly Committed Suicide by hanging herself on top of tree within the bush part of the street. The Cause of the suicide was not immediately known as the time of this report as there was no written note from the woman who hailed from Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli metropolis. It was however gathered that the woman said to be devout Christian of the Roman Catholic Faith had allegedly threatened to take her life the previous day,but to no avail while insiders said that her wrappers were found in the public toilet of the Compound she lived in on the fateful day as one of her granddaughters that sensed that something was amiss when she Observed that her grandmother had over stayed in the toilet, raised the alarm that attracted Co tenants and neighbours when she saw her grandmother hanging
But the Police Spokesman in Delta State, DSP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident disclosing that her body was immediately taken to the Mortuary for further investigation
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
