DELTA ORIENTATION BUREAU TO EMBARK ON SENSITISATION EXERCISE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Delta State Orientation Bureau has indicated its readiness to embark on sensitisation exercise in some secondary schools across the state on some challenges confronting youths.

This was made known when the Director of Orientation in the state, Mr. Mike Arinze, led the management team of the bureau on a courtesy visit to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, in Asaba.

Mr. Arinze stated that the core mandate of the bureau was sensitisation of the public on relevant issues.

According to him, the bureau decided to focus on secondary schools towards addressing issues of cultism, drug abuse, sexual misconduct and others vices that could endanger the future of the students.

He lighted the danger inherent in the vices, not only on the students, but in the larger society, adding that from available records, the first three months of every academic session were the most critical in the school system.

He reasoned that the students, after being on holiday for a long time, might be susceptible to exuberance and indulgence , saying that if not checked, could cause much damage, not only to the students but also in the entire school system.

He also stated that the society had an important role to play in effectively mentoring of the students to enable them secure a better future.

He further stated that the purpose of the visit was to seek partnership with the ministry for an impactful sensitisation exercise in the schools.

Responding, Mr. Oghoro acknowledged the importance of the planned sensitisation exercise by the bureau and referred to previous collaborative efforts of the ministry with similar aims through the school mentorship programme in the state.

He, however, expressed the need for feedback from the the planned sensitisation exercise, assuring the full support of the ministry for the exercise.

Mr. Oghoro advised the bureau to liaise with the Inspectorate Department in the ministry for a better knowledge of the spread of secondary schools in the state for an impactful sensitisation exercise.
