Tensions are mounting in the Sahel as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reveals readiness to deploy a standby force to intervene in Niger following the military coup on July 26. Despite trade and financial sanctions failing to deter coup leaders, ECOWAS’s military chiefs convened in Ghana to strategize on an armed response. Germany also proposed EU sanctions against the rebel leaders.
While emphasizing dialogue, the ECOWAS defense leaders have prepared details of a possible military intervention, with Ivory Coast, Benin, and Nigeria expected to provide troops. After recent jihadist attacks in Niger that resulted in the deaths of 17 soldiers, concerns about escalating violence have grown.
Considering Niger’s strategic importance, the situation draws international attention. France’s uranium imports from Niger fuel its nuclear plants, and the coup threatens this supply. Additionally, a massive gas pipeline from Nigeria passes through Niger to Europe, which could be jeopardized by the current instability.
While the U.S. and France seek diplomatic means to revert the coup, the military junta in Niger leans towards Russia for support. This situation has led some analysts to view this as a new battleground for the West and Russia’s ongoing Cold War.
Security expert, Mr. Matthew Ibadin, urges President Bola Tinubu to adopt diplomacy instead of aggression in addressing the coup, stressing the nation’s already fragile state. Professor Hussein Solomon from South Africa also emphasizes Niger’s key role in international geopolitics, especially concerning France and the U.S.
Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement on Nigeria, expressed concerns about the escalating tensions, warning against potential warfare instigated by foreign powers, such as France and the U.S. He emphasized the need for understanding and diplomacy over conflict.
