EFCC arrests Kwara civil servant for employment scam

Published

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ilorin Zonal Office has arrested a senior official of the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, Mrs Olajumoke Rhoda Oyawoye, for allegedly defrauding many job seekers under the guise of helping them to get jobs in the federal and state civil service.

Oyawoye, a level 14 officer with the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, allegedly received various sums amounting to about three million naira from her victims who are seeking for jobs, while issuing the unsuspecting job seekers fake offers of appointments.

Trouble, however, started for the Senior Kwara Civil Servant when two separate petitioners approached the Ilorin Zonal Office of the anti graft body, alleging that Mrs Oyawoye claimed she had been helping people to secure employments in federal parastatals as well as the state civil service.

The petitioners are Solomon Moronfoye and Salako Olalekan Abdulgafar.

One of the petitioners, Solomon Moronfoye, said: “I met her on the 27th April 2018 in my Church in Offa, she informed me and other Church members that she used to help people get employment at the Kwara State Civil Service Commission and Federal Government Parastatals, she told me that the money for state employment is two hundred and fifty thousand naira per slot while that of federal government parastatals is three hundred and fifty thousand naira.

“I met her again in Ilorin, I informed her that my children and other Church members are interested in both the state and federal appointments which include the Nigerian Immigration Service of which she gave me three forms with names of interested applicants, I gave her the sum of two million naira and she promised me that the applicants have already been employed.

“On September 2018, I discovered that all what she said was false and the people she collected money from through me were pestering me to return their money back and she kept giving series of excuses.”

According to the EFCC, items recovered from the suspect’s house include, Curriculum Vitae (CVs) of her victims, letters of offers of appointments of both the Kwara State Civil Service Commission and Federal Parastatals, among others.

The suspect, according to the EFCC, would soon be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
