“Election outcomes should not be decided by the judiciary – Bode George.”
Former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George, has expressed unease over the judiciary’s involvement in declaring election outcomes in Nigeria.
Chief George emphasized the importance of preserving the citizens’ rights to select their leaders. He vocalized this concern during a media session in his Ikoyi office, prompted by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s recent announcement in Abuja.
The tribunal disclosed its intention to rule on the challenges against Bola Tinubu’s declaration as the 2023 presidential election victor by the Independent National Electoral Commission, come Wednesday.
George, during his briefing, pondered why the courts were pronouncing election results instead of directing INEC to redo elections, ensuring genuine victors emerge.
Reflecting on his experiences, both as a military officer and a civilian serving under five presidents, he noted, “Our electoral system is in disarray and leads the country astray due to system manipulations.”
He criticized the INEC chairman for alleged unpreparedness during the election, suggesting future generations might not look kindly upon his leadership.
George remarked, “The judiciary, a pivotal governmental pillar, is now a hot topic in Nigeria. Should it dictate election outcomes? True democracy signifies a government for, by, and of the people – not solely the judiciary. Isn’t that undemocratic?”
He championed the public’s will, suggesting that if discrepancies arise, re-elections should occur as needed. He concluded, “The judiciary’s role isn’t to dictate winners and losers.”
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
