Amid Nigeria’s persistent fuel scarcity, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), has announced plans for the full operationalization of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries by the end of 2024. Additionally, the Kaduna Refinery is expected to be operational before the end of next year, according to Senator Ubah.
These developments aim to alleviate the nation’s domestic fuel demand, particularly in light of the anticipated production from the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Refinery. Senator Ubah emphasized the importance of leveraging modular refineries to further augment Nigeria’s capacity for crude oil refining.
Senator Ubah reassured Nigerians of his commitment to ensuring the timely restoration of refinery operations, noting that a technical team has been established to monitor progress regularly.
In parallel efforts to address energy challenges, Seplat Energy, a Nigerian independent oil and gas company, has unveiled plans to cease gas flaring by 2025. This milestone will be achieved with the commencement of operations at the ASA North project and Sapele gas plant, boosting the company’s gas supply capacity to 850 million cubic feet per day.
Samson Ezugworie, Seplat’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the company’s shift towards sustainable gas utilization, emphasizing its dedication to mitigating environmental impacts associated with gas flaring. He affirmed Seplat’s commitment to ending routine gas flaring by the second half of 2025, signaling a significant step towards environmental stewardship in Nigeria’s energy sector.
These initiatives reflect concerted efforts by both government and private sector entities to address Nigeria’s energy crisis and promote sustainable energy practices, marking significant strides towards enhancing energy security and environmental sustainability.
