Family Protests as Security Operatives Shoot 27-Year-Old Student Dead in Anambra

A final-year student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Noel Okechukwu, has been shot dead by local vigilante operatives in Anambra State. The incident occurred on August 17, 2024, at Senator Stella Oduah’s Estate in Akili-Ozizor Community, Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The victim’s family alleges that Okechukwu was extrajudicially killed by the estate’s private security guards. They claim that he was shot while on his way to buy fresh fish and that the guards, after shooting him, attempted to administer water to him before he died. The family has demanded justice, accusing the guards of acting unlawfully.

In contrast, security operatives defend the shooting, stating that Okechukwu was part of a group involved in looting and vandalizing property within the estate. They allege that the deceased and his associates, armed with pump-action guns, engaged in a firefight with the security guards.

The Divisional Police Officer at Ogbaru Police Division, Mr. I. Andrew, confirmed receipt of the petition and stated that the case file would be forwarded to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
