The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (SSANU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (NASU) is set to meet with the Federal Government today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. to address the ongoing strike.
SSANU Vice-President Abdussobur Salaam confirmed to PUNCH Online that the union received an official invitation from the government late Wednesday night.
“We received a formal invitation last night. The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. today and will be led by the Minister of State for Education in the Minister’s Conference Room,” he stated.
The unions commenced an indefinite strike on Monday due to the non-payment of salaries for the past four months, resulting in a halt to university operations across the country.
SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim pointed out that university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also not received their salaries, further disrupting university functions.
Ibrahim emphasized that 98% of union members are adhering to the strike and stressed that they will not return to work until their demands are met.
“This is a long-term struggle because it also affects Vice-Chancellors, bursars, registrars, and other senior administrators who have not been paid. The situation is severe, and no government representative has reached out to us. Our members are firm in their decision not to resume work until all salaries are settled,” he said.
The unions are calling for the payment of four months of withheld salaries, improved wages, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
