Bhadresh Gohil, an Indian national and former lawyer to the ex-Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, has been issued a court order by the United Kingdom (UK) to pay £28 million. He was found to have assisted in concealing illegally acquired funds.

In 2010, Gohil was convicted on 13 counts of money laundering and other charges related to his involvement in aiding Ibori in hiding proceeds from criminal activities. Following his conviction, he received a ten-year prison sentence, of which he has served half.

According to Reuters, the UK court has now compelled Gohil to pay over £28 million, or he will be subjected to an additional six-year sentence.

Ibori Reacts as UK Court Orders Confiscation of Over £100 Million

James Ibori, the former Governor of Delta State, has responded to reports suggesting that he may face an additional ten years in jail. The United Kingdom court has ordered the seizure of more than £100 million ($129 million) from him.

The British authorities previously charged Ibori with embezzlement of public funds and money laundering through UK banks and properties. The trial on the confiscation of assets commenced in February 2017.

Ibori expressed astonishment at continuously believing that justice and fairness would prevail in the British Court. He recounted facing numerous allegations and persecution from the court over the past decade.

He questioned his own sanity, quoting Albert Einstein’s definition of madness: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Despite facing logic-defying rulings and evidence of police corruption in his case, Ibori had held onto hope for a just outcome.

In one instance, he won his 2013 Confiscation hearing, resulting in the judge being unable to issue an order against him. However, the prosecution was later allowed to restart the trial, leaving Ibori disillusioned with the judicial process.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
