About 13,000 ghost teachers as well as 2,000 ghost schools have been uncovered on the pay roll of the Benue State government.
Commissioner for education and knowledge management Frederick Ikyaan announced this when he received the chairman Benue State Universal Basic Education Board,SUBEB, Grace Adagba, who paid him a working visit in Makurdi to seek support.
He told the delegation that governor Hyacinth Alia had received report from independent investigators concerning the ghost teachers syndrome scattered across communities, adding that government would checkmate the overbearing attitudes of some proprietors, principals or head teachers of most especially private schools out to exploit parents, students and pupils.
The education and knowledge management Commissioner further stated that the ministry was discussing these issues to alleviate hardship of parents and students.
He also told the SUBEB delegation that government has abolished issuance of school leaving certificate and replaced it with basic school certificate, pointing out that a federal government delegation is to visit the state on the implementation of the policy as well to introduce other reforms in the education sector.
The commissioner who assured the SUBEB delegation of the ministry’s support and synergy said the Alia administration has come with a clear mandate to add value to the lives of Benue people, stressing that he has no doubt in the ability of the SUBEB Chairman to deliver on his mandate given her pedigree and the manner she has commenced work few months into office.
In her remarks Chairman SUBEB and leader of the delegation Grace Adagba said she was at the ministry to seek synergy with the commissioner on ways of mutual benefits to the ministry and the board.
