In a move to address the “japa syndrome” affecting the healthcare sector, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has approved N200 million to support the international residency training of 150 medical doctors.
Governor Zulum, a fellow of the postgraduate medical school, announced the approval on Wednesday in Maiduguri during a meeting with the National Executive Officers of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
The funding will provide N2 million each for 50 medical doctors employed by the Borno State Government and N1 million each for over 100 Borno indigenes working in various federal institutions.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services in Borno State and expressed appreciation for the support from Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Ali Pate and Executive Secretary of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Muyi Aina.
During the visit, the NMA appointed Governor Zulum as a champion for universal quality healthcare delivery and the welfare of health workers. NMA President Professor Bala Audu made the announcement, acknowledging Zulum’s exemplary work in Borno State’s healthcare sector.
Professor Audu praised the governor for his ongoing infrastructure projects and efforts to improve health worker welfare in the state. He also highlighted a medical outreach event initiated by the NMA, aimed at supporting the governor’s significant contributions to healthcare delivery.
The NMA commended the Zulum administration for its leadership and advancements in primary healthcare, despite existing challenges.
