Healthcare Institutions Urgently Need Enhanced Regulation, Experts Assert
During a recent stakeholders’ engagement meeting organized by Clina-Lancet laboratories in Abuja, experts in the health sector emphasized the urgent need for improved regulations in health institutions to enhance healthcare delivery in the country.
Dr. Felix Ogedegbe, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cedarcrest Hospitals, highlighted the inadequacy of healthcare service regulation in Nigeria. He pointed out that compared to other regions worldwide, Nigeria’s healthcare space remains largely unregulated, allowing individuals, chemists, pharmacists, and hospitals to operate without sufficient oversight. Dr. Ogedegbe stressed the critical role of regulation in ensuring people’s safety within the healthcare sector and encouraging investment. He noted that effective regulation creates an environment where healthcare investments can thrive, while inadequate regulation hampers the growth of the healthcare system.
Dr. Ogedegbe also drew attention to the shortcomings in the regulation of the drug space, particularly outside urban areas, where the control over patent medicine is insufficient. He emphasized the urgent need for clearer definitions and improved regulation within the country’s healthcare system.
Dr. Olayemi Dawodu, the Chief Executive Officer of Clina-Lancet laboratories, echoed the call for partnerships in the health sector to achieve universal health coverage. She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders and customers to deliver excellent healthcare services. Dr. Dawodu emphasized the need for strategic partnerships and accreditation standards to ensure high-quality clinical laboratory services, which currently lack competitiveness due to the absence of proper regulation.
Dr. Kingsley Odiabara, Director of Medical Laboratory Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, reiterated the necessity of regulating clinical laboratory services. Dr. Odiabara emphasized the need to define specific roles and responsibilities within the healthcare sector to ensure efficient and accessible healthcare services, even in remote areas. He highlighted the importance of each individual and organization focusing on their areas of expertise to achieve universal health coverage and improve the overall healthcare landscape of the country.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
