Former Edo State governor and ex-National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, revealed his early retirement at 48 was due to his refusal to compromise during his tenure as Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service. Speaking at the inauguration of the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy, a tribute by the Edo State government for his 84th birthday and distinguished federal service, Odigie-Oyegun shared his stance on integrity.

He recalled being pressured by the Ibrahim Babangida regime to oversee retirements and sign import licenses outside of his responsibilities. Despite potential consequences, he chose to decline, prioritizing his values. He emphasized the importance of standing firm for one’s principles, even if it meant early retirement.

Grateful for the recognition, Odigie-Oyegun praised Governor Obaseki for his state advancements and encouraged Edo’s civil servants to serve with dedication and integrity, assuring them of eventual rewards for their uprightness. He expressed deep appreciation, noting, “It feels fulfilling to be honored in my lifetime.”
