The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has taken a significant step toward the Surulere Federal Constituency I bye-election by publishing the required notice, as mandated by law. Mrs. Adenike Oriowo, INEC Public Affairs Officer in Lagos, confirmed that the notice was displayed at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo-Yaba and Surulere Local Government Area Office for public viewing.
As stipulated by Section 28 (3) of the Electoral Act 2022, the notice was posted not later than 14 days before the scheduled election date of February 3, 2024. INEC has initiated the implementation of activities and a timetable for the elections, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring strict adherence to relevant laws and guidelines.
The spokesperson assured that INEC is fully prepared to deliver a credible bye-election in the Surulere constituency. The election was necessitated by the resignation of the former occupant, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, who, after winning, was appointed as Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu. The electoral process includes party primary elections from January 5 to January 9, with public campaigns by political parties set to commence on January 18 and conclude on February 1.
