President Bola Tinubu has pledged the Nigerian government’s unwavering support to the military in their fight against armed bandits. The assurance was made during a visit to the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto State on Tuesday, where he addressed troops involved in Operation Hadarin Daji.
Represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, the President’s commitment underscores his administration’s dedication to improving security in the country. Matawalle explained that Tinubu had directed an immediate review of the operations in the North West, where the security situation has been particularly challenging.
“President Tinubu is deeply concerned about the ongoing security issues in the North West,” Matawalle stated. “He instructed us to suspend our activities and come to Sokoto to oversee the operations of our troops under Operation Hadarin Daji. This visit is to ensure that all their needs are met so they can effectively combat the criminal elements.”
Matawalle emphasized that Nigeria is governed by the Constitution and highlighted the President’s strategic appointments of northern security personnel to key positions, reflecting his commitment to addressing the region’s security challenges.
“The President has appointed northerners to critical security roles, including myself and the Chief of Defence Staff,” he noted. “This is a clear indication of his dedication to resolving our major security issues.”
The Minister encouraged the troops to remain resolute despite recent setbacks, including attacks by bandits led by Bello Turji that resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and the destruction of two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.
“Do not be discouraged by recent incidents,” Matawalle urged. “We are here to support you and ensure you have the resources needed to eliminate bandits and criminals from this region.”
Additionally, Matawalle visited injured soldiers at a local hospital, offering reassurance that the Federal Government stands with them during their recovery and challenging times.
This commitment from the President and the Defence Ministry aims to bolster morale and operational effectiveness as the military intensifies efforts to secure the North West region.
